Located next to the 12th Century Lanercost Priory and just 400 yards from the World Heritage site of Hadrians Wall, Lanercost is a stylish new development, centred around two old stone courtyards, created, in 2009, by the Howard family of Naworth Castle. Lanercost incorporates Mike Farley's acclaimed Tea Room and Restaurant, a Farm and Gift Shop, a function room and six magnificent self catering holiday cottages - all with en-suite facilities - and finished and furnished to an exceptionally high standard.
Lanercost, an exceptionally important historic site, is situated in the tranquil Irthing Valley and its focal point is the 1169 Augustine Priory. Its remains consist of the Priory Church and some few of the offices of the Monastery, now fitted up for a farm house". The Romans lived here. William Wallace burnt it down. A dying Edward Ist, the hammer of the Scots, stayed here for 6 months in 1306/7 in what turned out to be his last campaign, bringing the seals of England with him and technically making it the capital of England. The Priory grew under the patronage of the Dacre family of Naworth until the Dissolution of the Monastries in 1539 but the monastic ruins still exist and the site, run by English Heritage, can be visited.
In 1859, George Howard, 7th Earl of Carlisle instructed the architect Antony Salvin to construct him a brand new Abbey Farm steading around two large courtyards. It is these buildings that have been transformed by a descendant and present owner of Naworth.
Lanercost is located 13 miles northeast of Carlisle and 11 miles from the M6. Gretna Green is within half an hour's drive. Newcastle and The Lake District are within the hour. Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh are two hours drive. It is a perfect place to explore the north of England and south of Scotland.
